Superstar pop singer Céline Dion is in serious grief right now. Just 48 hours after losing her husband, René Angélil, to a 20-month battle with terminal throat cancer, news spread last night that her 59-year old elder brother, Daniel Dion has died.
Céline Dion’s representative Kim Jakwerth released a statement that Daniel Dion died surrounded by his family after battling cancer for several years. The statement said he died at a palliative care center in Terrebonne, Quebec, outside Montreal.
“His last days were in the wonderful care of the doctors and personnel at Maison Adhémar-Dion, a palliative care center in Terrebonne Québec. For those wishing to send flowers, a donation to that organization would be very much appreciated,” the statement said.
Here are five things to know about Daniel:
1. Daniel lost his wife to cancer recently.
In 2015, Daniel’s wife Ghyslaine Bujold died from cancer at age 59, the same age he died last night.
2. He’s the father to three children.
He and his late wife had three children – Vaine, Guillaume and Marie-Michele.
3. Daniel and his superstar sister come from a very large family.
Céline has 13 brothers and sisters. He is 12 years older than Celine, as he is the eighth child in the family while Céline is the youngest.
4. They come from a very musical family.
After Céline made her singing debut at age five at her brother Michael’s wedding, she and her siblings — including Daniel –performed in her parents’ small piano bar called Le Vieux Baril, “The Old Barrel.” For over 22 years Daniel earned his living while playing the piano, organ and even the accordion.
5. He was a master craftsman in woodworking.
He trained as a craftsman and master cabinetry worker following high school, but eventually returned to his first love of music as his primary profession.
