In the wake of the latest claim by Nollywood actress, Chioma Nwosu that a certain Magic Lights Film Academy is requesting that acts who were shortlisted after the audition the outfit held in Lekki last week pay the sum of N10,000 so they can feature in its upcoming production, TNS revisits a similar alleged rip-off case which happened about five years ago.
The Favour Akakabota Scandal
In 2011, two Nollywood fame-finders, Emmanuel Ehiosun and Chika Onyeoziri cried out to Saturday Mirror about how they fell victim of Favour Akakabota.
According to Onyeoziri, he saw a movie audition advert by Zenox Movies which he attended in Ikeja. He was among 25 others who were shortlisted. He said Akakabota sent a message requesting the shortlisted candidates to pay N3500 to an Oceanic Bank account. Onyeoziri decided to see him at his Surulere office before paying the money not knowing that he rented the other guys who were present at the meeting. The unsuspecting wannabe was assured of the genuineness of the production outfit and that he should go ahead to pay. This he did and on his way to the office the next day, he met Akakabota on the way and he told Onyeoziri to lend him N1500.
In Onyeoziri’s words, “He said that he needed the money urgently that his ATM card had problem. He said he was going to refund the money the next day and promised to give me the lead role. I went the next day to pay in cash, and those, who paid through the bank, submitted their tellers. He later gave us the photocopies of the script for episode one of the movie titled Lost Opportunity, to rehearse with. “He told me to study the Kelechi role very well. The day I went for the audition, I got to know that he was arrested and detained for duping a lady of N25000 for modelling stuff. He later sent a message that there was no need for the audition and since last year, his number has been unavailable.“
The pair later conceded that they knew they could not get their money back but just wanted “Nigerian youths to know that he is a liar and a fraud, Press should stop promoting him, he duped us of our hard earned money.“
Nothing major came out of the issue as Akakabota denied the allegations and the two actors did not push the issue any further.
