The #AMVCA2016 is two days away and we cannot help but reminisce on one of the greatest event on the continent.
From its inception in 2013, the AMVCAs has given us the opportunity to celebrate some of the best talents in Africa. However, what you might not know is, some of these talents were relatively unknown as at the time of their big win and some, even though were known, did not seem to stand a chance against the people they were up against.
Here’s a list of some of the least likely winners of the AMVCAs.
Note: These Actors are undeniably talented and most definitely deserved the awards they won in these categories, they only made this list because nobody ever saw them winning these awards at the time they did.
Back in 2014, Tope Tedela was just an Actor trying to find his feet in the business. But all of a sudden, he was thrust in people’s consciousness when he won Best Actor for his role in A Mile From Home. Two years after his first big win, Tope has gone to star in other big movies, most recently Mildred Okwo’s Surulere.
But we’d never forget how unlikely it seemed for him to have held the prestigious award in his hands.

Femi Jacobs did leave a lot of people dumbstruck when his name was announced as the winner of Best Actor in a comedy at the 2015 AMVCAs. Winning over fan favorite, Kunle Idowu aka Frank Donga, a lot of people believed Jacobs won his award the wrong year.
But if he won, he most definitely must have done something right. And we think he did because his performance in The Meeting, which won him the award was lauded by Critics.

Before you send me side eye for daring to put Mercy Johnson on this list, I can explain.
Back in 2013, when MJ was nominated in the Best Actress in a Comedy category, she was up against Funke Akindele in her critically acclaimed and commercially successful role as Jenifa in The Return Of Jenifa.
And so, while audiences clearly loved Mercy, they still thought she stood no chance where Funke Akindele was but she did stand a chance and she won for her role in Dumebi The Dirty Girl.
Funke went on to win Best Actress the following year in The Return Of Sheri Koko.

Undeniably a talented actress, Kehinde Bankole had not been in any major cinema picture up until she appeared in Kunle Afolayan’s widely popular October 1.
And when nominations were announced and Kehinde landed in the same category with Rita Dominic (especially), everyone knew it was going to be tough. And quite a few people thought she couldn’t take home the award.
I guess that’s why it was one of the best wins of the night when she grabbed the AMVCA and, that cheque that came with it.
