The somewhat controversial documentary about late singer Amy Winehouse, Amy successfully debuted in Britain over the weekend. Directed by Asif Kapadia, the doc had the second biggest documentary opening after grossing $800,000 despite its rejection by the late singer’s father, Mitch Winehouse.
“We’re going to invite everyone that’s spoken on the other film and we’re not going to edit it, like they’ve edited me, and we’re going to tell the truth about Amy’s life because this is not,” Mitch had said during an appearance this weekend on British talk show Loose Women.
Amy takes over from Fahrenheit 9/11 as the biggest homegrown documentary in Britain. The non-fiction film also scored a $37,002 site average in the US.
