The Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has responded to a fatwa against him by an Indian Islamic group for his work on the controversial Iranian biopic Muhammad: The Messenger of God. Majid Majidi’s origin tale of the prophet Muhammad chronicles the birth and rise of Islam, rich with gestural flair and images of bracing beauty.
The Mumbai-based Raza Academy cited director Majid Majidi and Rahman in a statement last week attacking the film’s depiction of the Islamic prophet as a mockery of the religion. But in a letter published on Facebook, the composer said he was convinced he had acted in good faith by working on the biopic.
