Coming in second was George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, which took four awards, most of them technical – but nonetheless an impressive result for a mainstream blockbuster.
And there’s good news for us Nigerians in that we have one of our own, John Boyega winning the rising star award for his performance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The seventh episode of the Star Wars series also won for best special effects.
However shocking is the fact that two movies that had everyone expecting big wins coming into the awards, Carol and Bridge of Spies, both disappointed from their nine nominations. The latter took just best supporting actor for Mark Rylance, while Carol won nothing.
Meanwhile Brooklyn took the prize for Outstanding British film, beating the much-fancied 45 Years.
