After prolonged periods when it seemed like actor and comedian, Bill Cosby would not be made to account for his sins, he was yesterday, Wednesday, charged with sexual assault in Pennsylvania, USA.
The whole world was beginning to wonder if Cosby would ever face trial for the numerous allegations levied against him. However, the actor now faces three felony charges of aggravated indecent assault in the case, which is tied to a 2004 accusation in Montgomery County.
These criminal charges are rooted in a woman’s accusation that he drugged and sexually abused her at his home in Philadelphia in 2004.
Kevin Steele, a Montgomery County first assistant district attorney believes that charging Cosby “was the right thing to do.” He said the investigation involved a relationship between Bill Cosby and Andrea Constand who worked with the basketball team at Temple University, the actor’s alma mater.
“The evidence is strong and sufficient to proceed. A person in that state cannot give consent,” Steele also said.
Cosby’s lawyers have vowed to challenge the charges. They even claim that the charges are merely political tools in the election of Montgomery County’s District Attorney.
“The charge by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office came as no surprise, filed 12 years after the alleged incident and coming on the heels of a hotly contested election for this county’s DA during which this case was made the focal point. Make no mistake, we intend to mount a vigorous defense against this unjustified charge and we expect that Mr. Cosby will be exonerated by a court of law,” their statement said.
The judge set his bail at $1 million and ordered him to surrender his passport. “Yes,” was Cosby’s reply, accompanied with a smile after he was asked whether he understood the proceedings.
