Nigerian Telecoms are probably the ones who pump the highest amount of money into endorsements every single year. From Glo (who has most of your favorite stars on their list of endorsed celebs) to Etisalat, to MTN and Airtel, virtually every big Nigerian Star has been endorsed by one mobile telecommunication or the other.
Now, while the celebrities deserve their endorsements (mostly) isn’t it ironical that these service providers suck at what they should be primarily doing; providing good services?
I haven’t used my Glo line in way over a year and it is mainly because their services went from okay to plain ridiculous over a period of time. Mind you, I have been using this line since 2004 as a Teenager, and, it was my only line for eight years at least. So yes, at a point in my life, I was being held to ransom by my service provider while they invested so much money in celebrities with plenty foundation and powder who posed on billboards across the country.

Actress Eniola Badmus is the newest addition to the Etisalat list of endorsed celebrities.
And as if that wasn’t enough, this mediocrity graduated from providing poor services to extremely rude customer care Reps. I mean, I was rudely spoken to at the Glo HQ in Ibadan in 2014 because the particular staff who’d responded to me thought I had “spoken somehow” to her colleague :/
And while you may like to argue that this doesn’t exactly matter as long as they’re still in business, have you seen how much Glo’s rank has dropped amongst its peers recently?
So, instead of Glo worrying about stuff that is bringing them down the food chain, they would rather sign celebrities and give them plenty cash.
Clearly, their celebs don’t have enough influence.
And let’s not even discuss MTN and their below average performance and why they should NEVER have been granted a license in the first place.
Etisalat, I believe is one of the best but still, they can improve and I do not believe signing people would help influence that improvement in any way. As in, my favorite celeb would not make me buy something I don’t want to buy. I am Nigerian for goodness’ sake.
But hey, who cares right? It’s after all about them not the Customers.
