A group of female Hollywood directors are working very hard to gain prominence in the industry with the emergence of a new company called ‘We Do It Together‘. It is a non-profit production company that is dedicated to female empowerment in film, TV and other forms of media.
Film and TV producer Carol Polakoff praised the initiative at a panel discussion that held last week in the American Pavilion at the Cannes Festival saying, “We have launched something that is revolutionary, paradigm-changing and will change the discussion.” The panel discussion was moderated by The Hollywood Reporter’s Pamela McClintock.
The members of the We Do It Together board are: Chiara Tilesi(Founder), Carol Polakoff, Sandra Lucchesi(a literary agent), Avy Kaufman(a veteran casting director), Jodie Foster, Diane Warren, Valeria Golino, Victoria Alonso, Keri Selig, Leonor Varela, Lucas Akoskin, Cameron Mitchell, Paula Vaccaro and Orly Ravid.
Speaking about the objective of the organization, the founder, Chiara Tilesi said;
One of the problems a filmmaker has, and moreso as a woman, is the loneliness. As a man, it’s hard — as a woman, it’s impossible. We Do It Together is a movement, is a network to help each other. We have to produce our first feature and then little by little, we will address what can.
The ladies lamented the ‘weak’ tag commonly placed on women and talked about their experiences in Hollywood. Lucchesi said it made her uncomfortable when her male counterparts called her emotional and Tulesi added that male opinion was usually considered more valuable in the industry.
The first film project of the organization was announced at Cannes and is titled Together Now. Together Now will be a collection of seven short films helmed by female directors who will work with prominent actresses to tell an inspiring story. The directors involved are: Robin Wright, Catherine Hardwicke, Katia Lund, Patricia Riggen, Haifaa al Mansour, Malgorzata Szumowska, Melina Matsoukas and some of the actresses involved are Freida Pinto and Juliette Binoche.
