Emeka Ogwunze probably doesn’t ring a bell in the memories of the new generation but fans of the late Amaka Igwe‘s Checkmate will remember him. The former actor is now a licensed Customs Clearing Agent at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
However, he appeared at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi yesterday over controversies surrounding the sudden disappearance of $930,000 aboard Emirate Airlines in 2009.
According to Star Connect, the case was cited as FHC/L/386/09 , Federal Republic of Nigeria Vs Dr. Emeka Ogwunze, the Police and others, Ogwunze said under cross examination that the money was a contribution by several people for the purchase of goods in China and that he gave the money in tapped envelope to Prince Chucks Ikem Orji who obtained a tag after being checked in by Emirates Airline and provided Orji with escorts to assist him with immigration formalities. He told the court that he also gave him $100 as appreciation.
But the money did not get to China and all efforts by Emeka to retrieve it failed. The person he sent the money through then got him arrested. His international passport was seized and he was in detention for several days. He said he believes there was a lot of bribe involved in the process as he was detained in a manner that violated his human rights.
After some back and forth between lawyers of both sides, His Lordship, Justice Buba Idris adjourned the matter involving the Nollywood star, Emeka Ogwunze to 17 and 18 October, 2016 for further hearing.
