Just at a time when the anti-piracy conversation is becoming louder in Nollywood circles, HBO‘s megahit television series, Game of Thrones has smashed the all-time TV piracy record.
It was downloaded over 2 million times around the world less than 12 hours after showing on TV. According to Excipio, an outfit that tracks piracy, over 2 million individual internet addresses were found as at 10am ET yesterday after episode 5’s U.S. broadcast at 9pm ET on Sunday.
Excipio claims that the top five countries for the record-breaking piracy of the latest episode are the U.S (214,468 downloaders so far), Australia (167,301), Brazil (134,994), India (113,614) and the U.K. (107,857).
It will be recalled that episodes 1-4 of the current season of Game of Thrones found their ways to pirates almost a day before the April premiere.
