In a short video interview with BBC, star actor Will Smith has addressed the Oscars boycott row saying it isn’t a personal one for him.
A handful of black entertainers, including Will Smith and his wife – Jada, have publicized their plans to boycott the February 28 ceremony due to what is widely perceived as the Academy‘s bias towards people of colour.
Will said, “I was very pleased with how quickly and aggressively the Academy responded.“
“But I want to be very clear about the spirit of what I’m saying. This is far beyond me. This has nothing to do with me. This has nothing to do with awards,” the Concussion star pointed out.
He continued, “For me, this is much more about the idea of diversity and inclusion.“
When asked if he was content that something is happening, that change is going to come about, the actor responded, “It’s not us and them. It’s we. I’m a member of the Academy. It’s much more a domestic family issue than it is a civil rights issue. So it’s a problem that we all have to solve.“
