According to a report by Associated Press, legendary Lawrence of Arabia actor Omar Sharif is currently battling Alzheimer’s disease, as revealed by his agent Steve Kenis .
No additional details were provided about the 83-year-old or his care. His son, Tarek Sharif, had also earlier revealed the diagnosis in an interview with El Mundo. Egyptian-born Sharif rose to international acting prominence with his role in the 1962 epic Lawrence of Arabia— Sharif’s first English-language film.
The actor received an Oscar nomination for his role as Sherif Ali in David Lean‘s film opposite Peter O’Toole.
Sharif also played the title role in Lean’s Doctor Zhivago, as well as Fanny Brice’s husband, Nicky Arnstein, in Funny Girl alongside Barbra Streisand.
His last completed feature film credits were in 2013.
