Floyd Norman – An Animated Life, the award winning documentary on Floyd Norman who was the first black animator at Disney is now streaming on Netflix. This comes after a run in USA theaters that kicked off in the late summer, August 26, 2016.
Directed by Michael Fiore and Erik Sharkey, the film describes Norman’s journey as an animator.
Born in 1935 in Santa Barbara, His love for animation first came when his mother took him to see Disney’s Bambi and Dumbo. He went to college for a while after he was turned back by Disney for not having a college education. He eventually got the job after about 2 years and worked with Walt Disney until he died.
Norman then formed his own studio, AfroKids Animation Studio with Ron Sullivan. One of their first works was the first Fat Albert television special which aired in 1969 on NBC. He has worked on some Disney films including Toy Story 2, Dinosaur, Monsters.Inc,
The documentray recently won the award for Best documentary at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con. Watch it trailer below.
