Nigerian actor David Oyelowo has been invited to the membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, organisers of the Oscars.
The invitation was extended to Oyelowo recently, in appreciation of his stellar body of work, exemplified by his breathtaking performance as civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jnr in the Ava DuVernay‘s Selma even though, to the disbelief of many observers, he was snubbed on the list of nominees in the run-up to the Academy Awards earlier this year.
With this invitation, Oyelowo can now vote in the acting categories of the Oscars.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences now has over 7000 members and Oyelowo’s invitation, along with 321 other new members, is part of the academy’s efforts to have a more diversified membership base to accommodate as many members as possible.
