Veteran actor, Albert Egbe who made his name in the very popular 80s television sitcom – Basi and Company, has spoken to The Nation about what he thinks has changed in Nollywood and television between that time and now.
Popularly known for his catchphrase, “If you want to be a millionaire, think like a millionaire” when he played Mr. B in the show, Egbe believes that while the filmmaking business has progressed over the past three decades, television is on a recess.
When asked if he agreed with people who have said Nigerian television and film productions were largely better in the past than now, the actor said, “In a way, I would agree with them, but as far as television is concerned, it used to be better. I will grant you that because I was there.”
“As far as Nollywood is concerned, I would say Nollywood has improved from what it was. Having said that, that is not to say that Nollywood is where it should be because I believe that Nollywood can do better than they are doing currently. That is one the things I am trying to do,” Egbe continued.
On what projects he is presently working on, the Basi and Company actor said, “I’m doing a major international film production for the international market and it is a story about the Itsekiri people which is one of the reasons I’m still in Warri right now. I’m continuing with my research, fund-raising and location scouting.”
