The Gambian president, Sheik AJ Jammeh gifted a section of Nollywood stars plots of land in The Gambia on Saturday, October 11, 2015.
Patience Ozokwor, Eucharia Anunobi, Segun Arinze, Monalisa Chinda, Kanayo O Kanayo, Chika Okpala (Zebrudaya), Chinedu Ikedieze, Osita Iheme, Ejike Asiegbu, Tony Umez, Ngozi Ezeonu, Francis Duru and Ghollywood‘s Jackie Appiah are among those who were bestowed with the gift.
Speaking on Jammeh’s behalf, the nation’s Vice President, Isatou Njie-Saidy said the kind gesture was in recognition of the actors’ contributions and to encourage them to make his country their second homes.
“The President said as part of his belief in pan-Africanism, our values and heritage which Nollywood has helped to showcase on the world stage. He said he’s rewarding and encouraging the stars to come and make the Gambia part of their own,” Njie-Saidy said.
She continued, “Nollywood and Ghollywood have been able to capture and tell our stories better than any outsider can do. Africans relate to your stories and same with those in the diaspora and the Caribbeans and around the world.“
While responding, leader of the group, Francis Duru thanked President Jammeh for his generosity and expressed his colleagues gratitude and how humbled they felt. “We are just a call away he said. We shall work hard to build and encourage emerging new stars from The Gambia,” Duru said.
