Nollywood is set to be in the spotlight during this year’s Toronto Film Festival.
According to TIFF’s artistic director, Cameron Bailey, the Nigerian film industry’s creative and commercial cinema boom is what has attracted the focus of TIFF to it.
Toronto Film Festival’s City To City Sidebar is currently in its eight year during which it has spotlighted London, Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Buenos Aires, Mumbai, Athens and Seoul. This year’s Lagos lineup will be announced in August.
“Bigger budgets, greater artistic ambition — the new cinema of Lagos is bold, exciting, and ready to take its place on the international stage,” Bailey said. He continued, “The city of Fela Kuti’s music has also given birth to one of the world’s most vibrant film industries.”
Toronto choosing Nollywood for a focus is a sign the industry is maturing in terms of style and narrative, as TIFF fest-goers are used to the best in commercial and auteur filmmaking from the around the world.
The 41st edition of the film festival will hold from September 8 to 18, 2016.
