Award winning Hollywood actors, Lupita Nyong’o, Nigerian’s David Oyelowo and newbie Madina Nalwanga are the stars of the upcoming biographical film, Queen of Katwe. The film is based on the book The Queen Of Katwe: A story on life, chess and one extraordinary girl’s dream of becoming a grand master by Tim Crothers.
It depicts the life of Phiona Mutesi, a Ugandan chess prodigy who becomes a Woman Candidate Master after her performance at World Chess Olympiads.
Lupita shared a video of a first glimpse of the trailer on her Twitter page recently and she seems really excited about it.
In August last year at the D23 Expo, the actress described filming in Uganda as a homecoming of some sort as Uganda is right next to her home country, Kenya.
She also explained that the story is one of “commitment to a dream even in the most discouraging of situations. The slum of Katwe is a very difficult place to live, but you see these people living there with dignity and making it day by day. And so to go there and to have that environment to work from really did sober us and enliven us.”
Queen of Katwe is directed by Mira Nair and produced by Walt Disney pictures and ESPN films. Its general theatrical release is slated for September 30, 2016.
