The former Private Practice star learnt his hard lesson moments after an interview he granted about his son’s ancestry and what he would like the little boy to be identified as, went viral.
Now, Taye Diggs was previously married to his son’s mom who happens to be white. And while promoting his book, the Best Man actor revealed that he would love for his son to not be labeled as black but as bi-racial.
Driving home his point, he added that his son who is half black and half white would be disrespecting his mother’s side if he only chose to be referred to as black.
While being interviewed by TMZ, he was asked if he would be okay if when the boy grows up he chooses to identify with his mother’s side (aka white), to which Taye Diggs responded jokingly, “good luck to him”
Now while the rest of the world might be debating whether or not his comments made sense, here is what I think – Mr Diggs is f**king clueless. Excuse my French, but you see in a day and time like this, comments like the one Taye Diggs made can only be coming from a clueless place.
Either he is clueless or he has had too much weed.
Now here is why; in the last three years alone, America has witnessed a disturbingly high number of crimes against black people.
And some of these crimes have been perpetuated by Police against unharmed black people.
Now just in case you have tuned in to CNN and listened to 911 tapes made by victims or that are connected to the crime scene, you’d hear the way victims are being described.
When he or she looks like black, he or she is labeled black. Plain and simple.
Aint nobody checking for ancestry, DNA or the other side of the Victim’s family to know how to profile them. In short, the Police and the society decides which one you are. And in this case, since Taye Diggs’ son looks very black, he would be referred to as that.
Plus, racism is very much alive in America (if you don’t believe or you need proof Google is your friend) and when your skin color is a certain way, you are automatically seen that way.
Nobody cares to check if you have a White mom so you can get white privileges.
Now, I have never lived in America, neither have I ever visited but I have read Black history, watched black movies and I am very aware that crimes against black people from the days of Emmett Till are still the type we experience in these times.
Okay, so let’s move away from crime, Hollywood is still warming up to the idea of having people of color take up major roles in movies that are not centered on black history or slave trade.
Yet, black people still get typecast (most black people in Hollywood with an Oscar got it from stereotyped roles, most recently, Lupita Nyong’o) and still don’t get the opportunity they should get.
So, Taye Diggs should be attacking that part of the Industry, should be taking the movement ‘Black Lives Matter’ seriously and should learn a thing or two about fighting for the minority, because then his kid’s skin colour wouldn’t matter and he would not have to worry whether his mother’s white side is constantly remembered.
Because guess what?
White people don’t say stuff like this because they never had to worry if their kids were referred to as just white.
