Johannesburg – So Nigerian popstar Wizkid came all the way to South Africa to shoot his latest video – and while I suppose I should feel patriotic and thrilled, and share this news on social media, I won’t. Why? Because I already wasted three minutes of my life watching Expensive Shit.
Wizkid wakes up (looking flawless) after a wild night out to find a variety of “honeys” lying around the house (also looking flawless). In the subsequent scenes, which ignore all logic, the women are draped across the floor and furniture, very clearly not sleeping, and Wizkid proceeds to step next to, around and even over them to retrieve his bling and carry on with life.
In a science-defying video, one woman wakes up after having fallen asleep in the pool – somehow managing to avoid hypothermia and drowning. Elsewhere, a woman in a chair clings tightly to an empty Hennessy bottle, and somehow gravity doesn’t make it fall during her slumber – this is 21st-century film-making after all. Oh, except for the fact that you can see the cameraman’s shadow in a few of the shots. Awkward.
Wizkid tells us how these women like “expensive shit”, but it’s not clear whether this is praise or criticism. In one scene, the women are seen sneakily slipping off his gold bracelets, like the money-grubbing magpies they are. And yet Wizkid seems perfectly happy to quite explicitly dry hump one of these morally defunct women, pausing of course to look at the viewer and bite his lip. Except it’s not sexy, and the whole video is more soap opera than softcore porn.
Wizkid has attempted to join the ranks of international rap stars – who more successfully degrade women, and sing meaningless songs – and worse still, he spent a bucketload of money to do it. Expensive shit, literally.
