Hubert Ogunde was the biggest thing to happen to the theatre in Nigeria. Heck, the famous Actor, Musician and Theatre practitioner breathed life into Nigerian theatre and he is arguably the most known Theatre Practitioner of his time.
However, even Baba clearly had his ideas when it came to women, family and marriage.
In an old documentary, Ogunde revealed his thoughts on marriage:
Traditionally, Africans don’t count the number of their wives. We know we have wives, they may be five, they may be ten. My grandfather had more than twenty, so usually it is a secret to the household.
On his own marriage, he said:
I will just tell you that they (his wives) are more than ten.
Talk about the original Baddo.
On the number of children he had at the time of this interview of course:
And then Children too, it’s even forbidden to count, yeah… here you’re not allowed by tradition to say I have four children or I have fifteen children or I have twenty children. You just say, I have children. It works better than the White man’s arrangement.
At least now, Wizkid gets to tell people who ask the number of kids he has, “I have children”, Ogunde style.
Meanwhile, Hubert Ogunde was not exactly a fan of Lagos girls;
Usually, I do not marry any woman in Lagos.
So, just before you call any man Yoruba demon next time, just remember, that maybe he is just channeling his inner Ogunde.
