Religion is going to bring the death of the human race…and the end of the earth.
Every good thing in life will be destroyed by religion and its followers.
– Paul the Apostle (59AD)
Ok, calm down. He didn’t actually say so.
But let’s face it, religion is causing great havoc the world over. The major culprits? Christianity and Islam. While Christianity boasts of a less-violent contribution to the impending demise of this world, Islamic extremists are doing their best to forcefully nail its coffin. Christianity hasn’t always been this less violent though. Our friends at The Vatican know what I’m talking about.
Maybe the founders of these religions meant well at the beginning, maybe they didn’t. That’s not an argument for today. And please kindly cut me the crap of “But Jesus founded Christianity.” He didn’t. He worshipped at pre-existing (Jewish) temples and synagogues. He observed the traditional feasts and holidays. It was after he left this earth that trouble started. Same applies to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He didn’t create anything. He simply taught. And there are MASSIVE similarities in what was recorded as his teachings and those recorded of Christ’s.
The religious melee commenced much after these good people had left. And what a melee it has turned out to be! Bullshit now reigns unchallenged…at least in most cases. Religious leaders have beaten their followers into a gullibility pulp. Nobody is allowed to question them. If you do, you are simply disrespecting a man of God. Portions of the Holy Books are being twisted to suit the powered religious elites. What’s painful is that it is the gullible followers who are handing them the pliers and other tools with which to do so.
I was born into the Celestial Church fold. A church which reserves the largest and most lavishly decorated chairs for the “alagbas”; a church which asks people to sit outside or at the back of the church because they aren’t dressed in “soutana.” Its doctrine says you dare not wear shoes once you have the garment on, regardless of where you are. You can’t talk to a very senior “alagba” while standing, you will be perceived as rude, especially if you are quite junior in rank.
There is a particular ritual in the church called “irapada.” Redemption, if loosely translated into English. Not many members of the church are familiar with this ritual. It is performed if someone is on the verge of death, or believed to be at the risk of dying in the nearest future. Amongst other things, a banana tree trunk is buried, human burial style, to take the place of the person who is being “redeemed” in the other world.
From there, I moved on to a Pentecostal church. One of the trademarks of Pentecostal churches is their prosperity preachings. I don’t have issues with preaching prosperity and mind-boggling wealth. However, how am I not to question your teachings if you tell me that I am poor basically because I don’t give enough in the church, financially? That I am not sowing enough financial seeds towards my financial breakthrough?
Instead of telling me to get my lazy ass up and work hard, you tell me to simply ensure I give more. Or you tell me to pray more, especially in “tongues” because the devil might be hearing my prayer and “disturbing” it in the spirit world. You tell me that “Satan does not understand you when you speak in tongues.”
Really? Who would have thought that!
If I haven’t gotten what I read in the bible twisted, “people from other parts” could understand the apostles when they were speaking in “unknown” tongues because they were actually speaking in foreign tongues.
So, the devil hears me when I pray in say, Yoruba. But he does not understand me when I pray in, erm, Portuguese? Ta!
