Nollywood Actress Toyin Aimakhu knows a thing or two about cyber bullying and that is because a few Nigerians have turned her Instagram account to their sitting room and now live there.
You may remember that months ago, rumors of her husband Niyi Johnson cheating with one of her employees circulated and eventually seemed to be true when Toyin reportedly moved out of their home.
At the time, everyone was shocked at the revelation because here was a couple that had constantly served as couple goals for a lot of people battling marital infidelity. Toyin, who did not seem to have been Niyi’s “mate” in the Industry was quickly sided by fans, with many people hurling insults at Niyi, blaming him for the break in their marriage.
Now, either Niyi had a fantastic PR team or he was truly sorry, he hurriedly took to social media and apologised to everyone. He also put up a picture of his wife, confessing his wrongdoing and asking for a second chance.
But what was the twist in the story was the fact that Niyi allegedly was not erring for the first time, in fact if the gossip sites reports were to go by, no be today yansh dey for back where his infidelities were concerned. So, it was no surprise that Toyin chose to leave the marriage based on that.
But Nigerians were not about that separation life.
You see, when you’re a Nigerian woman, you’re raised for that day you would find a man and marry. Forget all that 21st century feminist thing and women conquering the world, that one no be your business. In fact, you’re only expected to conquer your kitchen and your husband’s bedroom.
You’re supposed to close your eyes to the infidelities of your man, turn yourself into rug (or marble, or tiles, depending on your choice) and allow him walk all over you. You’re supposed to be submissive (preferably with head bowed at all times while on your knees) while he does whatever he wants with whomever he pleases. You’re not supposed to voice out your feelings, except if your feelings includes you loving the charade that is his bad habit.
You disagree? Then take a trip to Toyin’s Instagram page and see the horrible comments Nigerians post on her page simply because she is “not with her husband”.
According to them, he has apologised and honestly, that should count for something.
It did not even matter to them that she once lashed out due to the frustration the pressure on her was causing. It did not matter to her that before that marriage, there was a working woman who through her sweat, built a strong brand.
It did not matter that a man’s infidelity is enough reason to actually leave a relationship.
But maybe it does not have to matter, maybe it does not have to make sense. Maybe all people need to do, is leave her the heck alone and mind their business.
Maybe, just maybe.
