So we saw the Friday, January 28 episode of Glam Squad that aired on DStv Channel 151, Africa Magic Showcase, which is touted as Africa Magic’s most premium channel.
If that episode is the yardstick, premium doesn’t befit the Glam Squad.
This episode had Toni Tones and the ubiquitous Shade Ladipo as quests. Well, Toni Tones wasn’t bad, look and all, and Shade Ladipo was the usual Shade Ladipo in her recent incarnation, which is as an unsuccessful smart mouth. If you have heard her on Smooth FM mouthing off, well that’s about all she does here, although with less impact.
The lead presenter, Vanessa Abdullahi, is pretty lost and is the most silent voice on the show. She doesn’t possess a presence that’s memorable after credits roll. She’s pretty and generally well put together but as a host, she just lacks the control that a show like this deserves.
The set of the show itself is problematic. It’s garish, the red and black in the background constantly reminding you of terrible Nollywood witchcraft movies where the witches wear flowing weave-ons and red and black capes.
The other parts of the studio are drenched in frames and supposedly arty pieces, such that Oyingbo market comes to your mind when you think of how busy it all looks. Also, all the pictures they used on the show were low resolution, like they picked them off Instagram.
If set looks busy, whoever handles the audio should be lined against a wall and shot. The voices of the guests and presenters bounce all over like ping pong. The presenter’s voice is lost in the discussion because someone wasn’t aware of a little thing called audio mixing. The laugh tracks and the clap tracks are the worst you will hear on any show this year. It’s so obvious they don’t have a live studio audience and they chose to lay those lousy, second-rate tracks? If they took a microphone to Ojuelegba bus-stop and begged area boys to laugh into a recorder, it would have been miles better.
The only saving grace of the show, if one can call it that, is Denola Grey. He’s good looking, stylish and knows his business. He comes across as knowledgeable in contrast to Shade Ladipo who comes across as being merely opinionated with real fashion knowledge or insights.
One can only hope that the show has better days.
