As the worldwide debate about how there is a lack of diversity in film and television, especially after the Academy Awards failed to name any blacks among the nominees for next month Oscars, British screen star and one of those who lost out in the Oscars, Idris Elba, has addressed a group of British MPs about how black actors are struggling to progress in the UK compared with US.
Elba whose performance in Beasts of No Nations has drawn widespread commendation believes there is a massive gulf between the TV world and the real world, and that positive change in the TV industry is slow to catch up with the reality.
According to him, “Change is coming, but it’s taking its sweet time.” He also said, “But when you don’t reflect the real world, too much talent gets trashed. Thrown on the scrapheap. Talent is everywhere, opportunity isn’t. And talent can’t reach opportunity.“
Over in America, black stars are beginning to announce their intentions to boycott the Oscars scheduled to hold on February 28, 2016.
