Another Theft Saga: UK-Based Writer Claims Nigerian Filmmaker Lifted Her Work

BY ESE DIBEBI

Less than a month after the Omoni Oboli “theft” saga, a UK-based writer has alleged that British-Nigerian filmmaker, Nosa Igbinedion lifted her work for his new film, Yemoja: Rise of the Orisha.

Mary Okon Ononokpono claims that the web series which is a sequel to Oya: Rise of the Orishas is her life story which she “conceptualised… created… plotted and wrote.” Ononokpono won the Golden Baobab Prize for her story Talulah the Time Traveller in 2014.

Yemoja: Rise of the Orisha focuses on Yemoja, the river-God. It is presented through the turbulent story of Amina, a neurotic, junior young doctor, who has her life thrown into turmoil when a politician’s son dies under her supervision.

Below are a series of Ononokpono’s tweets and her conversation with film enthusiast, Emil B Garuba.

TNS has not been able to reach either party for further comments as at the time of publishing this.
