Hollywood actress Gabrielle Union may have referred to her character on popular television series Being Mary Jane in the past but that didn’t stop her from taking the network to court in 2016 leading to a cancelation of the show next year.
The BET series which had Union as its leading lady ran for four years and became on of the network’s most successful franchises. However, a disagreement over production schedules lead to her taking the network to court for reneging on their agreement to have a break between seasons 4 and 5. The sport’s star wife had initially agreed to shoot 13 episodes each season for $150,000 per episode claimed that she was told a week before she was supposed to start shooting that the network plans on shooting two seasons of ten episodes. This would have denied her of her expected pay raise in season 5. She settled with BET for $3million.
The two hour final episode of Being Mary Jane is set to air in 2018.
‘To Every Fan of Being Mary Jane,
We have all worked so tirelessly to bring you a show that we could be proud to be a part of. Mary Jane has become my favorite character. We’ve screwed up together, laughed together, evolved together, and raised hell together. I love all her imperfections, and through playing her I became more forgiving of others who are imperfect and on the journey of self discovery and improvement. We watched her struggle with relationships with both men and women, and we watched her finally start to get her shit together. But the journey isn’t over yet. We, as a Being Mary Jane family, cannot wait to bring you this final 2 hour series finale movie that will answer all your questions about each and every character. More than anything, however, we want to thank you with every fiber of our being for faithfully watching the show and supporting our work… from the actors, writers, producers, directors and enormous crew over the years, we are humbled and we remain grateful. Thank you!’
