The 10-year old draft bill which resurfaced last weekend has since caused massive uproar among numerous Nollywood figures who think it is draconian and will spell the demise of the growing film industry. Among key figures who have openly kicked against the draft bill are Uduak Isong, CJ Obasi, Chris Ihidero, Walt Banger, Tope Oshin, Toni Kan and Olu-Yomi Ososanya.
Solomon’s petition has gathered 164 supporters since its start yesterday.
It reads in part, “The MOPICON bill is simply created to enrich a few people while the repercussions [is] devastating to filmmakers and creatives in the filmmaking Industry in Nigeria. The Bill is against young creative filmmakers and newcomers in the field and essentially does not add to the development of the industry or even the people who would be asked to register with MOPICON.”
Kunle-toba Dada on why he is supporting the petition wrote, “I’m signing this petition because I believe it will cripple the film industry in Nigeria with unnecessary restrictions unhealthy to creativity and progress” while Oto-Obong Ekpeyong believes the “document is insensitive to the independent filmmakers.”
