So, the July edition of our amazing Nolly First Fridays has come but it didn’t just go. It touched us, took us on an intriguing ride, taught us a thing or more about the industry, helped us meet new people that can potentially propel our career forward, gave us loads of fun and *inhales, exhales* it was truly, truly a good night. So I’m not here to gloat or make you feel bad if you didn’t attend, I’m here to simply just relive the night with everyone that was present and give you, (who couldn’t make it) a reason to be there for the August edition.
The day started at 5 pm as people came, took superb pictures, sat in the lounge chilling and waiting for the movie to start proper. It was Richard Mofe Damijo’s brilliant acting performance movie Out of Bounds. It was a movie about a pastor and the hypocrisy of Christendom. It featured an amazing cast including RMD, Bimbo Akintola, Rachel Oniga amongst others. There were a lot of laughs and moments of enlightenment. It was fascinating to see the difference in picture quality, costuming and all. People attested that indeed, Out of Bounds is a classic Nollywood movie. It legit left people challenged and in awe. I’m not even joking.
Then, it was discussion time; led by Chris Ihidero and Emma Uduma. Questions were asked and answered. Chris and Emma talked about Veteran filmmakers, e.g. Simisola Opeoju who is a big editor and special effects person and Oluwole for lighting. The discussion went beyond table shaking, we looked at the table critically and tried to figure out what could actually beautify it, make it stronger and lasting. Chris Ihidero told us that every film culture has its context. Whether one has attended a film school or not, the people who can truly help Nollywood’s new generation are the people who were there before, people who started it all.
In the words of Emma Uduma, “The way forward is collaboration”. We were able to explore our ability as filmmakers and actors. We were also able to weigh our journey as an industry. Did you know that an actor is not a filmmaker? Some actors didn’t know and neither did I. you should have seen the bummer look on their faces. Priceless, lol. Anyway, we learned all this and more. It was a super cool session.
After the discussion it was time to network and boy did people get in there! There was loads to drink and eat. People had the chance to talk to Chris and Emma one on one. We had fun games, it was crazy at the foosball table. People also sat in the lounge, playing FIFA. In case you didn’t know, Sola Roberts is kind of the reigning champ so if you think you can beat him, bring your A-game in August. A few people brought more food and popcorn. It was lit, If you weren’t there, I truly wish you were.
I can’t even capture fully Nolly First Fridays, nobody really can. It’s a night to simply experience yourself. this is hoping that you will be here in August and we will make more memories together.
See you then!
First Fridays is hosted by True Nollywood Stories; and MTV Shuga producers, SMATMedia! It is absolutely free to attend! For inquiries and to register, kindly send an email to .
