“There’s Something Wrong With How Yorubas Train Their Young & Subordinates” – Nollywood Filmmaker, Niyi Akinmolayan

BY NIYI AKINMOLAYAN

Something has been bothering me for a while. I’m totally tribe-blind but I can’t deny that I am Yoruba and I have lived with and worked with yorubas more than any other tribe. There is something wrong with yorubas and how they train their young and subordinates. No it’s not just a Nigerian problem. This one is a Yoruba problem.

Nollywood. I have realized most times to my disgust that most of the time Yoruba HODs curse and say hurtful things to their trainees. Usually when you ask why, they say that’s how they’ve been trained as well. Eventually the trainees spend a lot of time with their masters not really learning anything because knowledge wasn’t really transferred. They end up thinking about how to sell out on their masters and start their own. The masters also refuse to pass on useable knowledge for reasons I will never know. I mean how can you pass on knowledge when you treat your subordinates like shit.

This is a real problem and I see it all the time. Yorubas are supposed to be connoisseurs of knowledge. In Nollywood, most of the technical jobs are handled by yorubas. Why haven’t we found ways to train younger ones and empower them. Watch Yoruba mechanics and tailors. It’s the same and the young ones learn this bad behavior and pass it on.

If you are going to train. Train. It only makes you bigger.

Eyin omo odua. We are better than this. Let’s lead by example.
